Latoya Denise Nelson, daughter of Leon and Carolyn Codes, was born on September 14, 1983 in Charleston, SC. On December 30, 2018, she heard the voice of Jesus saying, "Servant of God well done; rest from thy loved employ, the battle fought, the victory won; enter thy Master's Joy." With these welcoming words of love, Sister Nelson went home to live with the Lord.

At an early age, "Tara", as she was affectionately known to her family, accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior. She was baptized under the pastorate of Rev. Dr. Leon G. Brown and became a member of Moncks Corner Baptist Church.

"Tara" was educated in the Berkeley County School System and was a 2003 graduate of Berkeley High School. She attended Miller Motte Technical College and studied phlebotomy. "Tara" was employed in various positions until her health failed.

" Tara" was a kind hearted person with a sweet soul. She loved spending time with her children and family. She loved people and never met a stranger. Tara loved watching scary movies and eating chocolate cake.

" Tara" was preceded in death by her grandmother, Geneva Codes; and grandfathers, Leon Codes, Sr. and Melvin Brown.

"Tara" leaves to cherish her precious memories: two sons, Averill Nelson, Jr. and Amaru Codes; daughter, Kamara Johnson; parents, Leon and Carolyn Codes, Jr.; grandmother, Mary Brown; siblings, Leon Brown and Star (Jeffrey) McCollum; seven uncles, Sam (Barbara) Codes, Robert Codes, Freddie (Marcie) Codes, Terry (Estelle) Codes, Douglas Codes, Reginald (Retta) Brown, and Laron Brown; four aunts, Anna (Adam) Jamison, Rosa Lee Smith, Mary (Jimmy) Chavis, and Shirley Ann Codes; a special aunt, Elouise Hudson; a special cousin, Andrea Carroll; special caregiver, Eunique Brown; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and dear friends.
