Lerline Elizabeth Heyward , was born on August 3, 1940 in Charleston, South Carolina, a daughter of the late Sam Smalls, Sr. and Alice Huff. She transitioned into eternal life with the Lord on September 27, 2021 in Charleston, SC.

Lerline received her education in the public schools of Berkeley County.

At an early age, Lerline joined Moncks Corner African Methodist Episcopal Church. She sang on both the Senior and Jubilee Choirs. She also served faithfully as a member of the Women's Missionary Society, Sunday School teacher, and member of the Stewardess Board.

She was employed by the Berkeley County School District as a bus driver and retired after 19 years to care for her grandchildren.

Lerline was united in Holy Matrimony to Samuel Heyward, Sr. on April 14, 1962. This union was blessed with four children. He preceded her in death. She was a faithful and dedicated wife for 52 years.

Lerline will be remembered for her loving heart, her gentle spirit, her unwavering faith in God, and the relentless support she provided to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Lerline leaves to cherish loving memories: her children, Joseph Heyward, Samuel Heyward, Jr. (Diane), Pamela Walls and Mark Heyward (Wilma); her siblings, Mary Carson, Eldora Huff, Jammie Cuttino (Ricky), James Legare, Morris Boone (Daisy), Roosevelt Huff, Jr. and Johnnie Reid (Rosanne); grandchildren, Jason Heyward (Cori), Makisha Gamble (Lance), Kimberly Moore (Leroy), Sean Gethers (Shanette), Tabitha Walls Stafford (Desmond), Daniel J. Heyward (Kioshi), Keyton Heyward, Tameka Walls and Azure Heyward;  great-grandchildren, Myecia D. Moore, Chase A. Moore, Sami Heyward, Makenzie Gamble, Makirah Gamble, Ally Heyward, Allen Heyward, Desmond Stafford, Jr., Bella Stafford, Teagan Weathers, Kamryn Heyward and Kailynn Heyward; a host of nieces, nephews, other relative and friends.

Viewing will be held on Sunday, October 3, 2021, 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Face masks are required. Graveside Services will be held on Monday, October 4, 2021, 11:00 a.m., at Old Nazareth Cemetery, Wampee Road, Pinopolis, SC. Please wear a face mask and practice social distancing.
