His-Story Leroy Gethers was born August 13, 1923 in Berkeley County, SC, a son of the late Sarah and Solomon Gethers. He was called home to rest on February 4, 2015 at Yale New Haven Hospital, New Haven, CT, after a long battle consisting of several illnesses. Leroy was a World War II Veteran; he was honorably discharged from the United States Navy in May 1946. In 1947, he was united in holy matrimony to Corrine Wallace; from this marriage came four children. A few short years later, he moved his family from South Carolina to New Haven, CT where he gained employment at the VA Medical Healthcare System in West Haven, CT. He retired from the VA in 1978, after 25 years of service as an Operating Room Scrub Technician. He was habitually meticulous in everything he did; therefore, he excelled in his chosen high pressure career field. Leroy Gethers was a member of St. Matthews Unison Freewill Baptist Church in New Haven, CT. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 67 years, Corrine Wallace-Gethers; four loving children, Harry Gethers, David Gethers, Terry Gethers (Cheryl), and Sherry Gethers-Guess (Tony); one loving grandson, Matthew L. Gethers; a daughter-in-law, Marian Campbell-Gethers; brothers, James "Pug" Gethers (Jean) and Henry Gadsden (Annie Mae); nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased in death by four sisters, Alma Gethers-Stretch, Rosa "Darling" Gethers-Green, Annie Gethers-Johnson and Mary Gadsden-Miller; nine brothers, Solomon "Boy" Gethers Jr., Joseph "Rock" Gethers, Alfred Gethers, Daniel Gethers, Sandy Gethers, Luke Gethers, Jaydee Gethers, Julius Gadsden and one additional baby boy lost during child birth. Leroy Gethers was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He was a man who stood by his convictions, and had a reputation for "telling it like it is". He will be extremely missed.
