Obituary

"Except the Lord builds a house, they labor in vain that built it" - Psalm 127:1 Today we celebrate the home-going of Mr. Lewis Chatman, a friend to many and a constant source of strength and motivation to his family. He was the son of Mr. Moses Chatman and Mrs. Lillian Gethers Chatman. He was born on May 25, 1925 in an area of Pinopolis, SC, formerly known as "Hog Swamp." Mr. Chatman transitioned from his earthly dwelling to his heavenly home on October 2, 2008 at his residence surrounded by his devoted wife and children. Although Mr. Chatman clearly understood that education was the key to success, he felt a stronger sense of responsibility to his family. To that end, he made the difficult decision to put his education on hold at an early age to help support his parents and siblings. In keeping with his personality of working hard and always looking to better himself, he taught himself to read and continued his education in the United States Navy, where he served his country honorably during World War II from 1943 to 1946. He furthered his studies in a vocational program for brick masonry and eventually became an accomplished self taught wood craftsman. He was employed by Haynes Construction Company until he retired some years ago. After retirement, he spent a number of years as a self-employed master wood crafter. His work can be found in many homes, businesses and churches in the area, including most of the work in Nazareth Reformed Episcopal Church. Hard work was never a barrier for Mr. Chatman especially when it came to his church. He led construction projects as well as other financial activities of the church, always willing to do whatever he could. He was united in Holy Matrimony to Louise Liferidge on November 14, 1948. This union was blessed with six children. Next to God, his family was his world and he dedicated himself to providing the best for them as evidenced in his children. He also used every opportunity to be a constant teacher in reminding them and all who would listen of the importance of having values; an education; personal responsibility for your actions; the power of determination; the power of independence and the need and value of patience. Mr. Chatman's Christian journey began at an early age and the church has always been an integral part of his life. His service started at St. Paul Reformed Episcopal Church. After St. Paul was destroyed by fire, he made the decision to move his family to Nazareth Reformed Episcopal Church. His church service included: a term on the Reformed Episcopal Church Synod Standing Committee, Church Leader, Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School Teacher, Chairman of the Building Committee, Confirmation Class Instructor and Chairman of the Men of the Church Auxiliary of the Reformed Episcopal Synod. He also attended Stevens Christian Institute of the Reformed Episcopal Synod. In addition to being the family patriarch, Mr. Chatman touched the lives of so many. He was respected and loved by his family and community. He leaves a legacy of honor and integrity in his loving family to: a devoted and loving wife, Louise Chatman; children, Jerome Chatman (Willa) of Ridgeville, SC, David K. Chatman (Jackie) and Alfredia "Vernie" Mitchell of Moncks Corner, SC, Ginger Chatman of North Charleston, SC, Faye Chatman (Ron) of Jacksonville, FL and Debbie Bryant (Jeff) of Goose Creek, SC; siblings, Leroy Chatman (Tina) of Kershaw, SC, Louise Hammond and Ruth Milligan (Albert) both of Moncks Corner, SC; ten grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
