Obituary

Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come. She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. Her children arise up, and call her blessed; but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised. Proverbs 31:10, 25, 26, 28, 30 Lillie Matthew Shaw was a virtuous woman. She was the daughter of the late Susan Matthew Green and Moses Green of Jamestown, South Carolina. She began this earthly life on Friday morning, October 16, 1914. Lillie was educated in the public schools of Berkeley County. She was united in marriage to Reverend Jessie Shaw on January 23, 1930. Eleven children were born in this union; five children (John, Jeannie, Alvie, Jeffery, and Henry) preceded her in death. Jessie and Lillie raised their granddaughter Ruth as their own. Jessie preceded Lillie in death in 1991. Lillie met Jesus at an early age. Prior to her marriage, she served faithfully at Old Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, Jamestown, SC. She later united with Old Emmanuel Reformed Episcopal Church, Alvin, SC with her husband for many years. She and the children walked to Sunday School and Worship Services. Lillie continued to work out her soul salvation at the Holly Hill Christian Church, Alvin, SC. Mother Lillie was a woman of strong faith. She did not have much of a formal education, but she was a Spiritual Warrior in the faith. She taught The Lord's Prayer to her children at an early age. Her children were required to know one scripture verse that was taught in Sunday School each Sunday. Each Sunday evening, she would lead the family in devotion and special prayer for her husband while he was away ministering the Gospel. She did not spare the rod; she trained her children as the Bible instructed. She has been blessed to witness the salvation of the Lord in her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and other family members. Mother Lillie was small in statue, but mighty in the Lord. If she thought you were not trusting in the Lord, she would tell you to "Trust in the Lord", and if you continued to talk, she would ask you, "Where is your Faith?" She believed and lived her life like Jesus was her all and all. You could not be sad around her, because she would remind you, that there was nothing on this earth that Jesus could not fix, and she would say something funny to make you laugh. She loved to sing the following songs: "Look Where He Brought Me From", "Down Through the Years, The Lord Has Been Good to Me", "This May Be My Last Time", "It is Only Jesus", "I Will Trust in the Lord", and "Stand By Me." Her favorite scripture was Proverbs 3:5-6 "Trust in the Lord." On September 1, 2010, Lillie's health began to rapidly deteriorate. She told her family that she was "looking for the glorious appearing of the great God"; she was ready to go home to live with the Lord. Lillie was waiting to hear the words, "Well Done, Thy Good and Faithful Servant." On Friday, September 17, 2010 at 9:15 p.m. in her home, Mother Lillie was called from the Labor of Love to Rest. She fought a good fight. She endured hardship as a good soldier in this life. She will always be remembered for her generosity and kindheartedness. She was a woman of prayer and great faith, a Godly mother who loved and cared for her children, grandchildren, and people. She always made sure everyone had something to eat when they were at her home. She was an exceptionally clean woman who loved to put her baby powder on and made her bed each day. She was very outspoken. Mother Lillie leaves a legacy of loving memories with: her children, James Shaw (Louise), Odessa Shaw, Rev. Lee Fonzer Shaw (Doris Loretta), Rev. Don Shaw (Deborah), Ernestine Shaw (Henry, deceased), all of Alvin, SC; Ruth Joyner (Peter) of Moncks Corner, SC, Virgie Lee Middleton (William) and Dondell Grinnage (Carl) both of Baltimore, MD; four daughters-in-law, two sons-in-law; 19 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, 9 great-great-grandchildren; seven grandsons-in-law, five granddaughters-in-law; a dear cousin, Ellastein Johnson of Washington, DC; two nieces, four nephews, other relatives, friends, and her church family. She was preceded in death by three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
