It is with heartfelt sorrow that we announce the passing of Mrs. Louise Roper Harris of Summerville, South Carolina.
We honor her life, legacy, and the many lives she touched. The following obituary reflects the love and remembrance shared by her family.
Louise Roper Harris, the last surviving child of the late Richard Roper Sr. and Sarah Cooper Roper, was born on November 5, 1921, in Berkeley County, South Carolina. She passed away peacefully on April 13, 2026, in Atlanta, Georgia, at the remarkable age of 104.
Mrs. Harris was a remarkable woman known for her lifelong commitment to education and entrepreneurship. She grew up in Charleston, SC, graduating from Burke High School and the Avery Institute (with honors), receiving a Teacher’s Certification in Elementary Education. After teaching, she received her degree in Business Administration from Columbia College, in Columbia, MO.
Mrs. Harris moved to California soon after, where she resided for over 70 years. She married Chester Harris in 1947. Throughout her career, she worked at various federal agencies in the Bay Area, retiring from the Oakland Army Base three times. After retirement she decided to go back to work to stay busy and accepted a role as a Text Book Clerk for the West Contra Costa School District, eventually retiring from that position in 2001.
Mrs. Harris was a member of the Iota Phi Lambda Sorority and served as the Chapter President for many periods. She was a devoted member of the Downs Memorial United Methodist Church where she served as Usher Board President, Secretary of the Administrative Board, Secretary of the Finance Committee, as well as a Communion Steward.
She is survived by her three children: Beverly Harris-Wright, Curtis J. Harris (Betty), and Millicent Harris-Henry (Daniel C.), as well as her 4 grandchildren: Laquel Wright-Chester (Wes), Clayton Wright (Rashawne), Daniel Henry, and Robert Henry.
A Celebration of Life Service for Mrs. Harris will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2026 at 11:00 a.m., at Gethers Funeral Home, Inc., 200 Grace Street, Moncks Corner, SC. Burial will follow in the Martha Jane White Cooper Memorial Garden, 1302 Cherry Hill Road, Moncks Corner, SC.
