Obituary

Lucille Gladys Roper Edwards, a daughter of the late Richard and Sarah Cooper Roper, was born March 12, 1924, in Berkeley County, South Carolina. She transitioned into eternal rest with the Lord on July 29, 2016, at East Cooper Medical Center, Mt. Pleasant, SC.

Lucille received her education in Cordesville Graded School and graduated from Berkeley Training High School, Moncks Corner, SC.  She then attended Avery Institute, Charleston, SC. Lucille earned a Bachelor degree in Elementary Education from South Carolina State College, Orangeburg, SC and a Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree from Atlanta University, Atlanta, GA.

Lucille began her career in education in South Carolina. She taught at Harleyville Elementary School, Harleyville, SC and Buist Elementary School, Charleston, SC. Upon relocating to Miami, FL, she became a teacher in the Miami-Dade County Public Schools, teaching at Goulds Junior High School which later was renamed Mays High School.

While teaching at Mays High School, she met Charles Edwards, Jr. They were united in marriage and relocated to Richmond, VA.   She then taught in the Richmond Public Schools for one year and returned to Dade County, FL.  Lucille obtained a teaching position at Poinciana Park Elementary School, Miami, FL.  She taught there for 47 years until her retirement in 1992.

Lucille received the Lord at an early age at Ebenezer AME Church in Charleston, SC. She attended church while residing in Miami and served as a Sunday School teacher. Upon her retirement, she returned home to Moncks Corner, SC, and moved her membership to Greater Emanuel AME Church in Cordesville, SC. Seeing the need for church hymnals and being the giving person she was, Lucille donated a set of AME Hymnals. Being an educator, and concerned about children's education, she earmarked funds to use to ensure that they could receive financial assistance in their educational pursuits. A woman of faith, Lucille believed in the power of prayer and prayed and read her Bible daily.

Lucille was a member of several organizations including the Florida Retired Educators Association.  In 1944, she joined Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and had the distinct privilege of becoming one of its Life Members. She gave unprecedented service to these organizations.

Lucille loved her family and appreciated all that they did to help her. With a zest for life, she loved to write, read and travel.  She touched so many lives and will be missed.

She leaves to treasure her legacy: son, Charles R. Edwards, III; sister, Louise R. Harris; special nieces, Bertha R. (David) Davis and Millicent Harris Henry; a special friend, Judy; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband and her daughter, Rev. Sandra K. Edwards.
