Obituary

Mrs. Lula Mae Blanding, daughter of the late Henry and Carrie Green Palmer, was born October 21, 1931, in Moncks Corner, SC. She departed this life on November 10, 2008. Lula Mae attended Berkeley County Public Schools. She was employed by the Berkeley County School System for 24 years and retired from St. Stephen Elementary School when her health no longer permitted her to work. She was a member of Sumpter Chapel United Methodist Church where she served in several capacities: the Senior Choir, U.M.W., Communion Stewart, Sumpter Chapel U. M. Prayer Band and the E.J. Chorale. Lula Mae was united in holy matrimony on August 9, 1953 to Samuel Blanding. This union was blessed with six children. Her husband and a grandson, Nicholas Blanding, preceded her in death. Lula Mae was a great cook. Everyone loved her homemade biscuits and sweet potato pies. She loved God and her family, and she loved making people laugh. Those left to cherish her memories are: her children, Elijah (Ophelia) Palmer, James (Cynthia) Blanding, Joe Blanding, Jimmy (Rose Mary) Wright all of Bonneau, SC, Norma Jean Sumpter of St. Stephen, SC, Patricia Blanding and Essie (Moses) Williams of Columbia, SC and Eartha Middleton of Bonneau, SC; one brother, Alex (Pearl) Palmer of Sumter, SC; brothers-in-law, Harry (Dorothy) Blanding of Middletown, NJ, Richard (Estelle) Blanding of New York City, NY, and Douglas Waring of St. Stephen, SC; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Blanding of Russellville, SC, Eartha Freeman, Martha (James) Anthony all of New York City, NY, Ann (Harry) Smalls of Irvington, NJ, Betty (Stephen) Carter of Boston, MA, Annie Ruth (Freddie) Lampkin, Elizabeth Middleton, Lily Mae Middleton, Irene McCray, Laura Waring all of St. Stephen, SC and Anna Lee Sumpter of New York City, NY; 14 grandchildren; three very special friends, Ida Oliver, Vera Govan and Leola Sumpter; one godchild, Alonia White; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
