Obituary

Lula Mae Wright was born on July 6, 1947 in McClellanville, South Carolina. She was a daughter of the late Henry and Betsy Simmons. The youngest of eleven siblings, Lula "Babe" graduated from Lincoln High School, McClellanville, SC. She furthered her education with degrees in Nursing Aide and then Cosmetology from Wilfred Beauty Academy. Lula moved to New York and joined her sisters, Rosetta, Ida and Marie. She later met and married her husband of 26 years, the late Reverend Eugene Wright. From this union, they were blessed with two beautiful daughters, Takeesha and Deana. Lula was a very active member in both the church and the community. In the community, she was a vital part of the Boulevard Housing Tenant Patrol. She worked at the United Learning Center where she seemed to serve also as the "Resident Baker". She also participated in the Neighborhood Garden Program. At church alongside her husband, they started the food and clothing program for the homeless and needy families. Lula served as president of the Missionary Society for years. She sang on the Gospel Chorus and was always around with a warm smile and a helping hand. Be it at church or in her community, she adopted many children. With her big heart and pleasant demeanor, she seemed to attract children both young and old. LuMae, Babe, MaeMae, "Mommy", as she was known, will be deeply missed. She leaves to cherish her memory: her daughters, Takeesha Wright-Sheppard, Deana Wright and Cheryl Wright; one son, Eugene Wright; two sons-in-law, Keyonn Wright Sheppard and Seiquan Robinson; two grandchildren, Zyair Holder and Anaya Robinson; four sisters, Lucy Garrett, Rosetta Walker, Ida Fells and Marie Pringle; brother, David Simmons; two brothers-in-law, Leonardo Pringle and William Garrett; two sisters-in-law, Lorraine Simmons and Alice Huggins; godsons, Warren Lane and Stephen Garrett; special children, Ronald Walker, Denise Lane, Lori Garrett and Nakia Pringle; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and devoted friends.
