Marver Evelyn Rogers, the fifth child of the late Theodore Simmons, Sr. and Elouise Altean Reid Simmons, was born in Berkeley County, Moncks Corner, South Carolina on January 4, 1939. She was affectionately known as "Evelyn". On Thursday, August 15, 2019, at her home, God called her name. She answered and went home to be with the Lord and her personal Savior, Jesus Christ. Evelyn was preceded in death by two of her brothers, Thomas Simmons and Elvin Simmons, and her sister, Miriam Simmons.
Evelyn was educated in the Berkeley County public school system. Upon graduation, she travelled to and made New York her home. Evelyn worked at the Mount Vernon and Yonkers YMCA before retiring from the New Rochelle YMCA after twenty-seven years of service as an office manager.
After retirement, Evelyn returned home to Summerville, SC. She reaffirmed her faith and became a member of the Greater St. James AME Church, Summerville, SC. She attended church and was devoted to visiting the sick and shut-in until her health failed.
Evelyn was united in holy matrimony to Walter Wayne Dillard, Sr. He preceded her in death. This union was blessed with three children. Her son, Melvin Anthony Dillard, preceded her in death. She later married Ronald Rogers who also preceded her in death.
Evelyn was a woman of integrity. She was faithful and believed in doing what was right. She loved God, her family and her church.
Her loving memory will always be cherished by: her two sons, Dwayne Scott Dillard of Summerville, SC and Walter Wayne Dillard, Jr. of Houston, TX; two grandchildren, Devin Dillard and Raven Dillard of Houston, TX; one great-grandchild, Maxim McCovery of Houston, TX; two brothers, Theodore Simmons, Jr. (Angie) and Calvin E. Simmons (Dorothy) all of Moncks Corner, SC; sister-in-law, Clara Simmons of Moncks Corner, SC; honorary daughter, Monica Dillard of Houston, TX; nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Home Going Service will be held Monday, August 19, 2019, 11:00 a.m., at Greater St. James AME Church, 1831 Jedburg Road, Summerville, SC. Burial will be in Willson Cemetery. Viewing will be Sunday, August 18, 2019 from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home and from 10:00 a.m. Monday until the hour of service at the church. There will be no viewing after the service.
