Mary E. Cooper, a daughter of the late Joseph and Rebecca Thompson Cooper, was born on November 13, 1913 in Berkeley County, South Carolina. She departed this life on Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at Roper St. Francis Medical Center, Moncks Corner, SC. At an early age, she joined Mt. Carmel African Methodist Episcopal Church, where she served on the Trustee Board for many years. She was also a devoted Sunday School student. As a young child, she attended elementary school in Berkeley County and she later traveled to Philadelphia, PA where she completed her high school education. She continued her higher education by receiving her Bachelor of Arts degree from Claflin University, Orangeburg, SC; her Masters' degree from Temple University, Philadelphia, PA and her Doctorate degree from New York University, New York, NY. Mary was a dedicated teacher in the Berkeley County School System for over forty years. She was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters and two brothers. She leaves to cherish her loving memory: two brothers, Joseph Sanders of Santee, SC and Willis White of St. Stephen, SC; one sister-in-law, Naomi Cooper of St. Stephen, SC; a special niece, Jan Cooper of St. Stephen, SC; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
