Obituary

Mrs. Naomi Byrd Bacote, the last of five children of the late James and Chessie Bryant Byrd, was born on August 17, 1922, in Colleton County, South Carolina. She departed this life on Monday, September 11, 2017, at Trident Medical Center, North Charleston, SC.

Naomi graduated from Walterboro High School, Walterboro, SC. She attended Claflin College and transferred to South Carolina State College where she earned a Bachelor of Art degree in Elementary Education and also did graduate studies.

On August 21, 1948, she was united in Holy Matrimony to Roscoe Clifton Bacote. This union was blessed with two children, Ethel and Roscoe Aljames. Her husband preceded her in death.

Naomi was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved God, music and had a passion for life and love for family and friends.  She enjoyed traveling and visiting with them.

She was an avid gardener who loved flowers and plants.  She had the gift of a "green thumb", enjoying watering and singing to her plants.

Mrs. Bacote taught second, fourth and fifth grade math  for 40 years. She taught three years in the Anderson County School System and 37 years in the Berkeley County School System.

Naomi was a dedicated  and active member of Moncks Corner Baptist Church for over 65 years.  She served as: President of the Junior Choir, Church Treasurer for over 20 years, a member of the Sunsetters Senior Bowling Teams, as a member of the Antioch Baptist Association of Deacon's Wives.

Naomi was active in her community, serving as a Pioneer Neighborhood Service Unit Director for Girl Scouts of the USA for over 25 years in Berkeley County. She was a member of Alpha Pi Chi National Sorority, Inc. and the Order of the Eastern Star, Moncks Corner Chapter for over 50 years.  She also was a member of the Berkeley County Retired Teachers Association.

Naomi leaves to cherish her memories: a daughter, Ethel Bacote Hill (Vincent) of Atlanta, GA; a son, Roscoe Aljames Bacote (Veronica) of Covington, GA; two grandchildren, Carl Clifton Hill (Cherie) of Atlanta, GA and Brie Bacote of Covington, GA; two great-grandchildren, Carter Clifton Hill and Callie Cherie Hill both of Atlanta, GA; a dear sister-in-law, Myraline Bacote Hill (Clinton) of Ocala, FL; a brother-in-law, Norman Hill of Ocala, FL; four nieces, two nephews, and a host of relatives and friends.

In addition to her husband and parents, Naomi was preceded in death by a grandson, Adonis Bacote; a sister, Clementina Byrd Waters; brothers, Jervie Byrd (Josephine), Nathaniel Byrd (Odell) and Howard Byrd; and a nephew, Jimmie Byrd.

A special thank you to the caregivers at the house who gave of themselves to assist Mom: Catherine Ellis, Patricia Lane, Barbara Thomas, Lisa Sambo, Leisa Simmons, Mary West, Bridgett Davis, Donna Allen, Henrietta Rock and Judy Cash. We are grateful for our extended family, Emily Brown, Michelle B. Taylor, Henry Brown and the members of Moncks Corner Baptist Church who gave and showed love to Mom. We thank you for the moments of happiness that you shared with her.  May God's strength and peace be with you always!
