Obituary

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want...Psalm 23:1 On March 12, 1925, Henry and Georgianna Cole McClennon were blessed with the birth of their first child, Nathan Alfred McClennon. He was reared and educated in the public schools of Berkeley County along with his six younger siblings. After completing high school, he continued his education at Claflin University in Orangeburg, SC; Gammon Theological Seminary in Atlanta, GA and Duke University in Durham, NC. He was an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church. He was also a member of Jefferson-Grant Lodge #315. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures. He leadeth me beside the still waters...Psalm 23:2 In September 1946, he married Ethel Lee Warren of Saint Stephen, SC. During this marriage, they were blessed with six beautiful children - three sons and three daughters - each of whom they raised to be successful Christian adults. As parents, education, hard work and putting God first was the foundation upon which his children were raised. He was very happily married for over 40 years until his wife went home to be with the Lord in April of 1987. He restoreth my soul; he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness, for his name's sake...Psalm 23:3 In 1948, he was called into the ministry and served as a local preacher while continuing his education and working at Westvaco in Charleston, SC. In 1955, he was assigned to pastor his first church, Saint Paul United Methodist in Saint Stephen, SC. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me...Psalm 23:4 In 1962, he was appointed by the South Carolina Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church to serve as pastor of the Brookgreen Charge in Murrells Inlet. These churches were Brown Chapel, Heaven Gate, and Saint James United Methodist. For eleven years, he faithfully conducted morning and evening services in order to accommodate the work schedules of all of his parishioners. He and his wife took an active role by becoming involved with the concerns of the community. He ministered to the needs of the people, not only through his congregation, but throughout the area. He thoroughly enjoyed the spirit of cooperation experienced in working with the wonderful people there. He never wavered in accepting the challenges nor in answering the call of those in need. He was appointed to serve as pastor of the Walterboro Charge in Walterboro, SC in June of 1973. These churches included Wesley, Cumberland, and Isaiah United Methodist. He was instrumental in improving the physical condition of these places of worship through the construction of new buildings. Once again, his primary concern was meeting the needs of his members and the needs of the community. He never focused on material gains for himself; but rather searched for ways to help those around him. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies; He married Carrie Lynette Coulter in December 1988 while continuing to pastor in the Walterboro area. In 1994, he retired from pastoring, but never from the ministry. He volunteered as a driver for the South Carolina Department of Social Services for four years from 1995 to 1999, transporting patients to medical appointments while also ministering to their spiritual needs. thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over...Psalm 23:5 This initial retirement was short-lived as he received a call from the bishop of the United Methodist Church after only three weeks, asking him to fill a pastoral vacancy. Being the devoted minister that he had always been, he postponed retirement in order to accept this call. This "temporary" assignment grew into ten more years of ministering to various congregations. He served as pastor at Simpson United Methodist in Allendale, SC; Saint Thomas United Methodist in Mount Pleasant, SC; John's Island United Methodist; Wesley United Methodist, Ladson, SC; Saint Stephen Parish, St. Stephen, SC; Saint James United Methodist, Sumter, SC; and Friendship United Methodist, Nesmith, SC. Additionally, after his second retirement in 2004, ten years following his first retirement, he willingly and joyfully filled in for various ministers whenever he was needed: Sunday morning worship services, revivals, funerals and weddings throughout Berkeley and surrounding counties. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life He lived a fruitful life and counted it a blessing to have touched the lives of so many people for more than forty years in the ministry. He freely gave of himself to everyone he met. He lived by example, the life of a true Christian. He will be remembered by all who knew him as a kind, strong, and charitable man who lived his life not for fame and glory here on earth, but for doing the will of his Lord and Savior. And I will dwell in the house of the Lord, foreverPsalm 23:6 He was preceded in death by a brother, O'Neil McClennon; a sister, Mildred Ford, and a grandson, George A. McClenan II. He will be greatly missed by his loved ones who mourn his passing: his wife, Carrie; his children: Ida (Oscar) Wilson, George (Betty) McClenan, Jerome Carl (Brenda) McClennon, Jeanette (Allan) Smith, Marion (Glennie) McClennon, Dianne (Henry) Gadsden, and Virginia (Raymond) Williams; his sixteen grandchildren, twenty-four great-grandchildren, and six great-great grandchildren; his brothers and sister: Leroy (Madelyn) McClennon, Roscoe McClennon, Henry (Betty) McClennon and Georgia Mae (Robert) Dingle. He will also be missed by two devoted first cousins, Martha C. Ransom and Rev. Melvin McClennon; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. 2 Timothy 4:7
