Obituary

With deep sorrow, yet with steadfast faith in God's promise, we announce the peaceful transition of Reverend Jacob Smith, of McClellanville, South Carolina, who entered eternal rest with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, December 13, 2025. His life and legacy are beautifully affirmed by the words of Scripture: "Well done, thou good and faithful servant… enter thou into the joy of thy Lord." (Matthew 25:21)

Reverend Smith was a devoted servant of God and a respected leader in the African Methodist Episcopal Church - Seventh Episcopal District, Palmetto Annual Conference, and Kingstree District. A retired Itinerant Elder, he faithfully served the Church for many years, including his dedicated work as Statistician for the Palmetto Annual Conference until his health began to decline. He also served as pastor of Greater St. Mark AME Church in Bonneau, South Carolina, from which he retired, leaving a lasting spiritual imprint on the congregation and the community.

In addition to his ministry, Reverend Smith honorably served his country in the United States Army and the National Guard, including service during the Vietnam War. He was also employed by and retired from International Paper Company, exemplifying a life of discipline, commitment, and integrity.

Reverend Smith leaves a rich legacy to cherish his memory: his devoted and beloved wife, Jattie Smith, who provided him with excellent and faithful care; his daughter, Carol Scott; grandchildren, Derrick (Candace) Alston and Stanisha Alston; great-grandchildren, Faith, Micah, Amari, and Layloni; siblings, Deacon Samuel (Daisy) Campbell, Bishop Samuel (Stephanie) Smith, Bishop John (Joan) Smith, Jr., David (Jeannette) Smith, and Bishop Jimmie (Mary) Smith; along with sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, extended family, and a host of dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his great-grandson, Malachi Alston.
