Obituary

"For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have keep the faith. II Timothy 4:6-7 Brother Richard Winns, Sr., affectionately known as "Buck" and "Richie", was born October 11, 1942 in the South Santee community of McClellanville, South Carolina. He was the oldest of sixteen children of the late Snow Boy and Celia Winns. The Lord called Richard home in the early morning hours of October 18, 2010, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital, Georgetown, SC. Richard received his formal education in the public schools of Charleston County, SC, graduating from Lincoln High School in the Class of 1960. Richard joined Greater Mt. Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church at an early age under the pastorate of the late Reverend J. S. Williams. He was a member of Class #11 under the leadership of the late Brother Tony Blake. He later moved to New York. In 1982 Richard returned to South Carolina to care for his elderly grandmother, the late Hessie Reid. Upon his return, he reconnected with Greater Mt. Zion AME Church under the pastorate of the late Reverend O. A. Gethers. He remained a member of Class #11 under the leadership of Sister Earnestine Campbell. On July 23, 1966, Richard was joined in Holy Wedlock to Areathia Hyman. This union was blessed with three children. Richard was employed as a Mail Courier for many years at the Pan Am Building in Manhattan, New York. After returning to South Carolina, he was gainfully employed at Wando High School, Mt. Pleasant, SC, until he became ill. Richard was a caring, loving, smiling, kind, and pleasant person who opened his heart to many people at random. He did not let his disability keep him from coming to church. To have known him was to love him. He will be dearly missed. Richard was preceded in death by several siblings: Herman, Shirley, Betty, Mildred, Snow Boy Jr. and Dennis. He leaves to cherish his memory: his loving children, Cathy Michelle Winns of Staten Island, NY, Richard Winns, Jr. of Brooklyn, NY, and Melanie Anne Winns of Los Angeles, CA; five grandchildren, Se'Quan, Ria, Chanel, Angel and Aaron; five sisters, Essie (Francis) Taylor, Carolyn Winns, Candis Winns, Valdean Winns all of McClellanville, SC, and Lorretta (Delano) Kennedy of Kentucky; four brothers, Francis (Peggy) Winns of Brooklyn, NY, Darrell Winns of McClellanville, SC, Calvin Julius Winns of Seattle, WA, and Harris Lee (Annalisa) Winns of San Jose, CA; aunts, Mary Howard, Martha Woodyard, and Frances Reid; uncles, Deacon Norman (Nina) Reid and Thomas Scott; in-laws, Hasha and Maxine; special and caring friend, Hattie; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and caring friends. A special thanks to cousins Alvin Garrett, Elmina Reid, Herbert, Cheryl and the neighbors at Milliner Estate in the Maryville section of Georgetown, SC.
