IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Roscoe Haynes,
Sr.
April 8, 1952 – November 14, 2022
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now, a crown is being held for me - a crown for being right with God.
Roscoe Haynes, Sr., the son of the late Oscar Haynes and Catherine Irick Haynes Walden, was born on April 8, 1952 in Moncks Corner, SC. He received his Christian foundation in Bethel AME Church, Holly Hill, SC and St. Paul AME Church, Valdosta, Georgia. He later joined Moncks Corner AME, Moncks Corner, SC.
Roscoe was educated in the public schools of Orangeburg County SC, Berkeley County SC, and Lowndes County GA. Roscoe attended Pinevale High School where he joined the band and tried to play the trombone, and later became the Drum Major. In 1970, he graduated from Valdosta High School, Valdosta Georgia. After high school graduation, Roscoe moved back to Moncks Corner SC. He attended Kentucky School of Mortuary Science, Louisville, Kentucky where he pursued a career in mortuary science. He later attended Palmer Business College, Charleston, SC. His final career move was to Haynes Construction where he worked and mastered the skills as a finishing carpenter. He was an expert in trim work and especially liked doing ornamental wood work. His finishing carpentry skills can be seen in many of the homes built by Haynes Construction. After leaving Haynes Construction, Roscoe worked as a carpenter and electrician with Georgia-Pacific in Russellville, SC where he later retired.
Roscoe loved Christ, working in the church and working to make Moncks Corner a great place to live. He taught Sunday School and was instrumental in starting the young adult choir which later became the Ensemble choir. Roscoe was instrumental in helping the choir get their robes which were admired by many. For many of the choir rehearsals, Roscoe came with prepared music that the choir would sing. At Moncks Corner AME, he was a Trustee and worked diligently with the sound system. Roscoe was instrumental in getting the sound system that was the best fit for the church. To the glory of God, he eagerly worked to get the church's first Hammond Organ. Roscoe played a vital role in the music ministry at Moncks Corner AME and his impact will always be remembered. He also organized trips for the youth of the community by providing young people the opportunity to attend the well-known college Drum-Line events in Atlanta, Georgia as well as the South Carolina State University Homecoming Parades and games. Many young people would not have had this opportunity had it not been for the persistence of Roscoe and his desire to encourage and uplift young people of the community. He also worked with the Sons of Allen on the local and district level. With the Sons of Allen, he was active in helping to build handicap accessible ramps and make home repairs for the elderly and sick members of the community. Roscoe served on the Moncks Corner Planning Commission for twenty years. He enjoyed listening to gospel music, watching Star Trek and the 60 Minutes Sunday news program. His love for people and this community is an example of his love for Christ. And now these three remain: faith, hope and love...But the greatest of these is love. His legacy of love and commitment to many, will forever be remembered.
We shall wear a crown - When the battle is over - We shall wear a crown
