Mr. Royal Smith, the son of the late Isiah and Nancy Beauford Smith, was born on September 7, 1931 in Jamestown, South Carolina. He departed this life on Saturday, September 13, 2008 at Roper St. Francis Hospital, Charleston, South Carolina. Royal was educated in the public schools of Berkeley County. He worked for the South Carolina Highway Department for twenty-five years until his retirement. He was a member of the Savannah Creek Hunting Club. Royal was a member of Liberty Reformed Episcopal Church where he served faithfully until his illness. He was a member of the Leadership Board, the Vestry Board and was Church Treasurer for many years. Royal was united in Holy Matrimony to Ms. Shirley J. Perry on November 22, 1952. This union was blessed with five children; one daughter, Sandra Lee Walker, preceded him in death. Royal leaves to cherish his precious memories: a loving and devoted wife, Shirley J. Smith; three sons, Royal J. Smith of Birmingham, AL, Charlie N. Smith of Jamestown, SC and Ronald Smith of St. Stephen, SC; one daughter, Sheraldine Fulmore of Jamestown, SC; two foster daughters, Estella Rodriguez of Andrews, SC and Debra S. Patrick of Atlanta, GA; a special niece who was raised in the home as a sister, Jeanette V. Dilligard; thirteen grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; seven nieces and nephews; a host of other relatives and friends.
