Rufus Rivers, the son of the late Moses and Harriett Gillians Rivers, was born July 5, 1914 in Cordesville, South Carolina. He departed this life on Thursday, July 10, 2014 at Trident Medical Center in North Charleston, SC. He was educated in the Berkeley County School System. Rufus gave his life to the Lord in 1961, at Emanuel A.M.E. Church during their Spring Revival. He was an ordained Local Elder in the A.M.E. Church and served in many other capacities. Rufus was united in holy matrimony to the late Maggie Ellington Rivers. From that union was born eight children, two of whom preceded him in death, Laura Mae Rivers and Henry William (Jake) Rivers. He was a farmer, barber, mechanic, and he also worked with the Berkeley County School System from which he retired. He was also a Master Mason and a member of Moncks Corner Lodge #323, F.&A.M., PHA. Rufus leaves to cherish his memories: six children, Thornley Rivers, Daisy B. Myers of Moncks Corner, SC, Thelma Matthews of Brooklyn, NY, Ruth M. Speights of Tallahassee, FL, Elijah Rivers of Brockton, MA and Georgetta C. Rivers of Moncks Corner, SC; a grandson he raised as his own, LeRoy Rivers; one son-in-law, Leon Matthews; one daughter-in-law, Onethia Rivers; one sister-in-law, Mabel Coaxum; eighteen grandchildren, twenty-one great-grandchildren, five great, great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Father, in heaven, we thank you for his life. We thank you for One Hundred years and Five days of your sustaining grace. Thank you for giving him to us as a father, Thank you for ordering his steps ad leading him in your paths of righteousness, We worship you for who you are. You are GOD (our Lord, Savior, King and Redeemer). And we praise and bless you for all that you've done. Even in death we praise and worship you. For You still doeth All Things Well!!
