Ruth Ann Brown Jones was born on November 6, 1946 in Bonneau, South Carolina, to the late Moses Sr. and Elouise Middleton Brown. She departed this earthly life on Thursday, December 3 , 2020 at her residence. She was preceded in death by her daughter Bernadette Brown and her brother Moses Brown, Jr.
Ruth Ann received her education in the Berkeley County public schools, graduating from Russellville High School in 1964. After high school, she relocated to Jersey City, NJ. While there, she was employed with Metro Glass and Emerson TV and Radio.
Ruth Ann met and married the late Howard B. Jones in 1972 and moved to Camden, NJ. She and her family returned home to South Carolina in 1974.
Ruth Ann always sought employment along with her duties as a homemaker. She was employed as a substitute bus driver for Berkeley County School District for a brief period. She then gained employment with Reliable Electric Company in 1978 until its closing in 1994. When Reliable closed, she returned to school and attended Trident Technical College until being accepted at the South Carolina Police Academy. Upon completion of the Academy, she became employed with the Berkeley County Sheriff Department as a Correctional Officer. She retired after five years of service. She left retirement in 2015 to work as a driver with Berkeley Seniors.
Ruth Ann spent her retirement years caring for her grandchildren, making floral arrangements, and gardening, which was her favorite pastime.
Ruth Ann was an active member of Bethel United Methodist Church. She served as a member of the Senior Ushers, member of the Senior and Gospel Choirs, Epworth Church Representative, Co-Coordinator of the Senior Adult Ministry, President of the United Methodist Women, Hospitality Committee and the Trustees.
Ruth Ann leaves to cherish her memories: three daughters, Sonia Nelson (Walter) of St. Stephen, SC, Angela Brown of Moncks Corner, SC and Shekere Knight (Marvin) of North Charleston, SC; one son, Brian Brown of Ladson, SC; four grandchildren: Jason Brown, Tevin Brown, Bre'Ana Jones and Walter K. Nelson; four great-grandchildren: Jada and Jason Brown, Karson Hugee and Riyann Brown; three half-sisters, Mozelle Brown and Juanita B. Sims (Warren) both of Washington, DC, and Armeta Brown of District Heights, MD; one half-brother, Xavier Brown of Washington, DC; one sister-in-law, Louise M. Brown of Manhattan, NY; one beloved grand-aunt, Victoria B. Anderson of St. Stephen, SC; two aunts, Inetha Martin of Washington, DC and Rebecca Blanding (Fred) of Hyattsville, MD; one uncle, Harry L. Brown of Washington, DC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Viewing will be held Thursday, December 10, 2020 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home (Moncks Corner). Graveside Services will be held Friday, December 11, 2020, 11:00 a.m., at Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery, 1245 Forty-One Road, St. Stephen, SC. As per CDC guidelines for COVID-19, please wear a face mask and practice social distancing at the viewing and the service.
