Sally "Sal" Nelson McHoney, the daughter of the late John Nelson and Sina Swinton Nelson, was born on April 29, 1928, in Cross, South Carolina. She was the last of eight children. On Saturday, February 8, 2020, she slipped away into eternal life with the Lord at her home surrounded by her family.
Sally was educated in the Berkeley County School System. She was united in holy matrimony to Harris "Bub" McHoney who preceded her in death. From this union, they were blessed with seven children, two of whom preceded her in death.
At an early age, Sally accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal Savior at Bethel United Methodist Church. After marriage, she joined Greater St. Mark African Methodist Episcopal Church where she served faithfully until her health declined. Sally was a virtuous woman of God. She was strong in faith, full of wisdom, and had a genuine love for everyone she met.
Sally was preceded in death by two sons, Willie James McHoney and Harris McHoney, Jr.; seven siblings: Willie (Elizabeth) Nelson, Joe Manson (Rosa) Nelson, Martha (Robert) Washington, Joseph (Sadie) Nelson, Christopher (Mary Lee) Nelson, Queenie (Henry) Guest, and Buck Nelson; five in-laws, Annie (Mack) James, Mary (Aaron) Middleton, David (Elouise) McHoney, Buck Sr. (Elizabeth) McHoney and Christopher McHoney II.
Sally leaves to cherish precious loving memories: five children, Shirley (Bobbie-deceased) Pough of Philadelphia, PA, Annie (John-deceased) Wright of Bonneau, SC, Johnnie Lee (Shirley) McHoney of Bronx, NY, Robert (Barbara) McHoney and Christopher McHoney, III of Bonneau, SC; one daughter-in-law, Mary McHoney of Bonneau, SC; three special "adopted" children, Reverend Jacob and Jattie Smith of McClellanville, SC and Carol Scott of McClellanville, SC; 17 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; and a host of special nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Her Home Going Service will be held Thursday, February 13, 2020, 1:00 p.m., at Greater St. Mark AME Church, 918 Black Oak Road, Bonneau, SC. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Viewing will be held Wednesday from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
