Sam Black, Jr. was born on July 3, 1941 in Charleston, South Carolina, a son of the late Sam and Annie Black. He was the third of six children. He departed this life on June 8, 2014 at his residence in North Charleston, SC. Sam attended the public schools of Charleston County and graduated from Bonds Wilson High School in 1961. Sam's spiritual growth began at a very early age at Calvary African Methodist Episcopal Church and continued until he relocated to New York City, NY, upon graduation. On April 3, 1964, he married Elise Montgomery. From this union, God blessed them with four wonderful boys: Terry Hooks, Reverend Marvin Hooks, Dewayne Black and Michael Black. While in New York City, Sam joined Rush Temple African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church where he served as a faithful member and usher until he returned to Charleston, SC. In 1999, Sam rejoined Calvary A.M.E. Church where he served as a devoted member and usher until his health declined. Sam leaves to rejoice in his memory: his loving wife, Elise Black; his sons, Terry Hooks, Reverend Dr. Marvin Hooks, Sr. (Terry), Dewayne Black (Monique) and Michael Black; a devoted adopted daughter, Reverend Rose Williams; two brothers, Jerome Black (Lajune) and Tom Black (Cora); two sisters, Elizabeth Addison (Dr. Oliver) and Rebecca Gordon; sixteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins; and a devoted church family. Special thanks to Brother Phil Scott for your untiring support and to the best neighbors and special friends, Brian Mays and Malcolm Wong. ******************************************************************************** To leave an online memorial message for the family, please click on 'SIGN GUESTBOOK.'
