Obituary

"For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens." - 2 Corinthians 5:1 Sam Smalls, Sr., affectionately called "Bubba Sam", was born October 12, 1918, in Bonneau, South Carolina to the late Mary Owens and William Smalls. Sam was granted his angel wings on Tuesday morning, July 13, 2010, at Roper Berkeley Medical Center, Moncks Corner, South Carolina. He received his education in the public schools of Berkeley County. Sam lived his life with integrity and bravery. At an early age, he moved to Charleston, South Carolina where he worked at Westvaco Plant and later at Charleston Naval Shipyard as a machinist where he retired from in 1987. A man with little education but blessed with many gifts, skills and talents causing him to be highly recognized by his supervisors. He loved farming but soon had a yearning for something greater. In 1972, he became an entrepreneur and opened the doors of Smalls Aamco. Sam was united in Holy Wedlock to Beatrice Grissett on December 10, 1942 in Philadelphia, PA. This union was blessed with nine children. Sam was preceded in death by his wife and twins, Paul and Silas. Sam's Christian journey began when he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior. He joined White Chapel Holiness Church where he served as a Deacon. He later moved his membership to St. Stephen Baptist Church and served as a Deacon under the leadership of Reverend Harvey Mack, Jr. He was also a member of Jefferson-Grant Lodge #315, F. & A.M. Sam loved family gatherings, checkers and Cadillacs, but most of all he loved eating. He devoted much of his time and energy to his business. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and sharing old stories of yesteryear. His favorite songs were, "I'm a Soldier in the Army of the Lord" and "When We All Get to Heaven." He will be greatly missed by his family and everyone who knew him. Sam leaves to cherish his legacy and memories: his loving children, Delores Smalls of the home, Daisy Snider, Sam Jr. (Sylvia), Daniel (Betty) Benjamin (Lisa) and John (Shirleen) Smalls all of St. Stephen, SC, Carrie (Ervin) Staley of Ladson, SC, Earline (Samuel) Heyward, Johnny (Rose Ann) Reid both of Moncks Corner, SC; one brother, Johnny (Essie) Smalls of Holly Hill, SC; one sister, Evelyn Legree of Washington, DC; two grandchildren reared in the home, LaSonia (Tyrone) Martin and D'Wayne Smalls both of Goose Creek, SC; twenty-three additional grandchildren; thirty-two great grandchildren; five great, great grandchildren; a special friend, Lillie Gibson; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
