Samuel Rivers, a son of Annie Coaxum and Thomas Rivers, was born on December 25, 1917 in Berkeley County, South Carolina. He departed this life on Friday, January 4, 2013 at Trident Medical Center, North Charleston, SC. Samuel or "Sammie", as he was affectionately called, attended the public schools of Berkeley County. He worked at the South Carolina Department of Transportation for many years until he retired. Sammie was baptized at an early age, and he loved the Lord. He was a member of Anderson Baptist Church. Samuel was united in Holy Matrimony to Rosa Rivers on December 10, 1938. This blessed union of 72 golden years was blessed with twelve children. His wife preceded him in death on November 16, 2011. Four children: Ellen Lee Rivers, Robert Rivers, Rogers Rivers and Dorothy Smalls, also preceded him in death. Those left to cherish her memories are: his children: Rev. Arthur Lee (Lula) Rivers of St. Stephen, SC, Delores (Ronald) Wedderburn of Summerville, SC, Alphonso (Barbara) Rivers of Lawrenceville, GA, Edward (Mary Lee) Rivers of Mount Holly, SC, Rev. Willie Dean (Linda) Rivers of Moncks Corner, SC, Daniel (Bernice) Rivers and Hattie J. Washington both of Columbia, SC and Kenneth (Wanda) Rivers of Moncks Corner, SC; seven grandchildren reared in the home: Bernard (Sheila) Rivers of Moncks Corner, SC, Veronica (Ronald) Richmond of Columbia, SC, Jerome Rivers of New York, NY, Anthony Rivers of Jacksonville, NC, Dennen Reid and Roger Rivers, Jr. both of Moncks Corner, SC and Tyesha Rivers of North Charleston, SC; 32 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; 12 great, great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Ruby Rivers; one brother, Joseph (Eva) Rivers of Atlanta, GA; a host of nieces, nephews and other extended family members.
