Obituary

Sarah Nelson Thompson was born on May 13, 1932 in Bonneau, South Carolina. She was the second child born to the late Lee and Florence Stretch Nelson. She went to be with the Lord on Friday, September 23, 2011 at The Hospice Center of Charleston in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. She received her formal education in the Berkeley County School System. She also received training as a Nurse's Aide and as a result of this, she worked at the Berkeley County Hospital for many years until it closed. She continued in the nursing field, providing home care until she was unable to work. She was a member of Moncks Corner Chapter #161 Order of Eastern Star. Sarah was united in Holy Matrimony to Samuel Thompson, Sr. on June 10, 1950. This union was blessed with four children: Rosa, Samuel, Jr., Christopher and Vera. Her husband and four brothers, Henry James Nelson, Benn Nelson, Joseph Nelson and Allen Stretch preceded her in death. As a former member of Mt. Carmel AME Church, she served faithfully as a Senior Usher, Stewardess and Choir member. Upon her return to her home church, Bethel United Methodist Church, she continued to serve faithfully. As a dedicated member of the church, she served as an Usher, Communion Stewardess and was a member of the United Methodist Women. Sarah loved her church. She enjoyed sponsoring programs to raise funds to help support the ministries of the church. She was also a member of Usher Union #7. Sarah was a caring, loving, considerate and giving person. She loved unconditionally. She was always willing to share whatever she had with someone in need. She had a supply cupboard that was called "Sarah's Grocery Store." She enjoyed canning: okra and tomatoes, beans, peas, peaches and pears. There were several families that looked forward to receiving those jarred vegetables. It was nothing for her to say, "get a bag and put together a bag of sugar, grits, rice, flour, hand towels, some cans of vegetables, toilet tissue, detergent and chicken in it and take it to "Ms. So and So", or take a "piece of money". Sarah did not look for any recognition for what she did. She was grateful and did not forget those persons who helped her when she was in need. Sarah was a woman of peace and did not like confusion, always willing to take a step back in order to keep the peace. She was a woman who was a role model for her children, because she not only "talked the talk, but she also walked the walk." Sarah did not consider herself completely dressed if she did not have her hat on. Her hats were not plain; her hats had to be, as she would say, "NASTY". She leaves a legacy of unconditional love. She will be greatly missed by those who loved and knew her. Those left to cherish her precious memories: her children, Rosa Lee Owens of Moncks Corner, SC, Samuel (Carolyn) Thompson, Jr. of Charleston, SC, Christopher Thompson of St. Stephen, SC and Vera T.
