IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Sarah Smalls
Smith
June 26, 1938 – January 31, 2019
Another solider gone to get a great reward; she fought a good fight, she kept the faith and now she has gone home to God.
Sarah Ella Smalls Smith, loving known to her family as "Ta", was the daughter of the late Edward and Rebecca Smalls. She was born on June 26, 1938 in Moncks Corner, SC. She answered the call of her heavenly Father to come from labor to reward on Thursday afternoon, January 31, 2019 at Trident Regional Medical Center in North Charleston, SC.
Sarah was educated in the public school system of Berkeley County and was a graduate of Berkeley Training High School.
At an early age, she accepted Christ as her personal Savior and became a communicant member of Nazareth Reformed Episcopal Church where she served faithfully as a member of the Pulpit Aide Board until her health failed. Sarah loved God, her church, her church family, good singing, praising God and you would find her sitting on the front pew worshipping and wearing her beautiful hats.
In 1957, Sarah was united in Holy Matrimony to George Smith. This union was blessed with three children: Alpha, George, Jr. and Caroline. She was preceded in death by her husband and her son George, Jr.
Sarah loved people and had a heart full of compassion. She was employed by the Berkeley County School District as a bus driver, until retiring in 1989. She often drove for athletic events and had many warm memories and stories to tell about her adventures with the students. She worked at the Lion's Beach Pavilion during the summers. For many years, she diligently worked at the Bishop Jerdan Conference Center as a cook during the summer camp sessions. She loved sitting in her recliner looking out her front door as the cars and people passed. She also loved when people entered her door and she could spend time talking. She loved to cook and she was especially known for her fruit cake, sweet potato pie and her famous potato salad. She loved children and especially loved to talk about her children, grandsons, nephews and her many adopted "children." She loved hats and wore many beautiful ones on Sundays and special occasions. She loved flowers which was evident in her yard, her porch and inside her home.
Sarah was a "no nonsense" person known for telling those she loved and those she met the truth and nothing but the truth while practicing tough love. She was a low-key comedian and could have people laughing for hours with her stories, her wisdom and her down to earth wit.
Sarah's soul has gone to God who giveth; the earth will claim its own. She is shouting around the throne while we are left to mourn. Those left to cherish the precious memories of her life are: her devoted children: Alpha Smith and Caroline Smith both of Moncks Corner; daughter-in-law, Mildred Smith of Irmo, SC; grandsons, Aaron and Montel Smith of Irmo, SC; sister, Maggie Sass of Goose Creek, SC; uncle, Calvin (Lucille) Bryant of Moncks Corner, SC; three sisters-in-law, Justine Smalls and Flora McCants of Moncks Corner, SC and Mary Ann (James) Ware of North Augusta, SC; brother-in-law, Leroy Smith of Philadelphia, PA; her caregiver, Ms. Bessie Pinckney and many nieces, nephews, neighbors, family and friends.
