IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Sarah G.
Smith
October 10, 1919 – June 5, 2020
"When I've gone the last mile of the way, I shall rest at the close of the day. For I know there are joys that await me…"
Sarah Greene Smith, affectionately called "Lillie", was born October 10, 1919 to the late Hector and Clara Middleton Gadsden in Oakley, South Carolina. At the blessed age of 100 years old, she transitioned to eternal life on Friday, June 5, 2020 at her home in Moncks Corner, SC.
Sarah was educated in the public schools of Berkeley County. Reared in a loving, Christian home, she gave her life to the Lord at an early age and joined Centenary United Methodist Church, Oakley, SC. There she served the Lord and her church faithfully. She served as a member of the choir, United Methodist Women and the Helping Hands Club. She was also an active member at St. James AME Church, serving on the Senior Choir and with other auxiliaries. Sarah also served her community as a member of the NAACP and the Progressive League.
Sarah had a love for flowers and gardening. She was known for having flourishing green plants in her home, bountiful gardens and assisting with making floral arrangements. She enjoyed baking and cooking for her family. Her hands were also gifted to sew and make beautiful quilts. Sarah lived a full life. Not only by years, but also life experiences. She enjoyed traveling to visit with family and friends throughout the state and country.
Sarah was blessed to join in Holy Matrimony to the late Daniel Greene of the Strawberry section of Moncks Corner, SC in November 1937. To this union seven children were born. After the untimely death of Mr. Greene, the Lord blessed her once again with marriage. In May 1967, she was joined in Holy Matrimony to the late Channing R. Smith of the Cooper Store section of Moncks Corner, SC. To this union, one son was added. To know her was to love her as a strong, yet gentle and outgoing person. She was a daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She never knew a stranger; she shared love with everyone she came in contact with.
She was preceded in death by her son, Theodore Daniel Greene; siblings, Elouise Jones, Evelina Gethers, Mary Brown and Jackson Gadsden; and great-grandson, Willie Marion Haynes, Jr.
Those left to cherish her many memories: her children, Loris Howie (Marion Brown) of Brooklyn, NY, Vermell Jones of Moncks Corner, SC, Jettie R. Ellington (David, Jr.) of Oakley, SC, Vernon Greene of Columbia, SC, Charles Greene of North Charleston, SC, Debbie Greene of Summerville, SC and Anthony Smith of Fort Worth, TX; sisters, Maggie Bracey of North Charleston, SC, Christina Williams of Oakley, SC, Jestine Rodgers of Philadelphia, PA and Victoria Ferguson of Brooklyn, NY; Goddaughter, Michelle Pringle (Willie); ten (10) grandchildren, twenty (20) great-grandchildren, and three (3) great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
