"For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven." - Ecclesiastes 3:1 Sergeant First Class Harry Major, US Army Retired, the son of the late Alfred and Mary Ida Major, Sr., was born on May 8, 1930 in Berkeley County, South Carolina. He peacefully entered into eternal rest on Sunday, June 19, 2011 (Father's Day) at the Ralph H. Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center, Charleston, South Carolina after a brief illness. Harry was educated in the public schools of Berkeley County. He continued his educational training in the military. Harry was a faithful member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Moncks Corner, SC where he sang on the choir as a child. Harry met and married the apple of his eye, the former Geraldine Baylor. They were married for fifty-nine (59) years. Harry was never one to sit idol. He loved to work and always desired better opportunities for himself as well as his family. He possessed a passion to serve mankind. He enlisted into the United States Army and served his country for twenty-two (22) years, retiring on April 30, 1973. Harry toured numerous countries during his military career and received various outstanding awards and honors, some of which were: National Defense (1 Oak Leaf Cluster), Army of Occupation (GEM), Good Conduct (4th AWD), Armed Forces Expeditionary (Korea), Vietnam Services and Vietnam Campaign W/DVC 60, 1 O/S Bar and the Army Commendation and Bronze Star. He was a comrade of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post #9509 and a Trustee for three years. He was especially honored to serve as the Grand Marshall of the Veterans Day Parade in Moncks Corner, South Carolina on November 10, 2010. Harry believed that one should never paint their future with one brush, for there are numerous possibilities for a good life. Harry continued his work ethic after his military career by working at the V.A. Medical Center, Charleston, SC and the V.A. Hospital in Cleveland, OH where he felt like he was the Officer In Charge. Harry never met a stranger. He cherished moments spending time with his family and friends and preparing meals for gatherings. Harry was also known for preparing his specialty, "shrimp and grits." Friends and family enjoyed Fried Fish Fridays. Harry loved his family dearly and cherished his grandchildren. Our family has enjoyed the precious times spent with him. He was well loved. Harry was preceded in death by his sister, Rebecca Brown and two granddaughters, Monique and Jennifer Ferguson. He leaves to remember his life experiences: a loving and devoted wife, Geraldine B. Major; three children, Gwendolyn Richardson (special friend, Willie Crank) of Moncks Corner, SC, Retired Sergeant First Class Harrietta (Falvie) Jones of Henderson, TX and Anthony Johnson of Hallandale Beach, FL; adopted children, Ricardo Major of Charleston, SC and Denise Hamilton of Summerville, SC; three brothers, Alfred (Emma) Major, Jr. of St. Stephen, SC, David Leroy (Shirley) Major of Atlanta, GA and Nathaniel (Essie) Richardson of Manning, SC; three sisters, Martina (Jeff) Patterson and Delores May both of Tacoma, WA and Ida Mae Major of San Diego, CA; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; several sisters-in-law; two aunts, Louise Ford and Maggie Ford; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
