IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Shirley M.
Lloyd
February 25, 1946 – January 2, 2017
Precious in the sight of the LORD
is the death of His saints… Psalm 116:15
Shirley M. Lloyd was called to eternal life with the Lord on January 2, 2017 at Trident Medical Center, Charleston, South Carolina. She was born on February 25, 1946 in Berkeley County, SC, a daughter of the late Samuel M. Middleton and the late Elouise E. Middleton.
Shirley attended the public schools in Berkeley County and graduated from Russellville High School. After graduation, she relocated to New York City and was employed in several venues, including an insurance writer for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and a unit secretary at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital.
It was in New York City where Shirley met, fell in love with, and married Herbert Lloyd, Jr. They were blessed to have six children: Eric, Tremaine, Gary, Kiesha, Dewayne and Antoine. Antoine preceded her to Glory in 2004; he was the joy of her life and even as her health declined, Shirley would refer to him as "My Baby."
After Shirley and Herbert returned to South Carolina, she was employed as a cashier. The final position she held was as a Teacher's Aide/School Bus Attendant at the William Dingle Head Start Program. She was particularly fond of all of the children she worked with.
Shirley was a devoted member of Bethel United Methodist Church in the Forty-One community of St. Stephen, SC. A woman of faith, her love for the Lord was undeniable.
Shirley's passion was gardening, and she took great pride in her flowers. As a gardener, she possessed the qualities of patience, perseverance and love. She demonstrated these qualities with her family and friends as well. Shirley's love for family and friends was immense. She was a generous, loving, supportive and unselfish woman who always put others before herself. She nurtured her 14 grandchildren and loved them unconditionally. Each one of them had a special bond and connection to her. She also was blessed with six great-grandchildren who each occupied a special place in her heart.
Shirley touched the lives of many people and her memory will live on. She will be remembered for her caring heart, her kindness and her gentle spirit.
She leaves to cherish and treasure her memories: a loving and devoted husband, Herbert Lloyd, Jr.; children, Eric Lloyd, Tremaine Lloyd, Gary Lloyd, Kiesha Lloyd, Dewayne Lloyd (TaKeya), and grandson Eric G. Lloyd Jr. whom she raised as her own; 14 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ann Judge and Gloria Ferguson; three brothers-in-law, Herbert Savage, Bernard Lloyd (Jacqueline) and Thomas Haynes; one sister-in-law, Laura Middleton; two special nieces, Tremeka and Kim; a special friend, Mickey; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by six siblings: Sam, Robert, Laurie, Moses, Ben and Johnny.
