Obituary

Shirley, lovingly known by her family as "Shirl" or "Ti-Ti Shirl", was born on April 27, 1955 in Detroit, MI to the late John and Annie Brown. As the middle child in a family of nine children, Shirl developed many of the negotiating, navigating, social, leadership, and managing personality traits that characterized her birth order. An avid reader, Shirl taught herself to read at age three. Her love for reading continued throughout her life. Once enrolled in school, Shirl's academic brilliance was obvious to her teachers and she was placed in a gifted program. Her reading aptitude easily transferred to writing when she became a member of the East High School Blue Bombers newspaper staff. Shirl graduated from John Hay High School in 1973 and also attended Cuyahoga County Community College. Shirl joined the United States Army in 1977. During her thirteen year tour of duty, she earned numerous accommodations such as the: Army Achievement and Good Conduct Medals along with Meritorious Service Awards. She was stationed in various locations around the world including: South Carolina, Germany, South Korea, Hawaii and New Jersey. All of her assignments afforded Shirl the chance to pursue her passion to travel. A trekker, in every sense of the word, her immense desire to "hit the road" could be seen in the joy she expressed and experienced every time an excursion opportunity presented itself. After leaving the military, Shirl embarked upon a career with the White Castle Corporation. She launched her tenure with the company as a Castle team member. Many soon recognized her talents as a leader, collaborator and manager. An independent and out of the box think, Shirl quickly climbed the supervisory ladder, first moving from an instructor to shift manager then assistant general manager and finally securing a general manager position. She adapted easily to various situations, showing flexibility working in ever store in northeast Ohio. While being a team player for 27 years, she was cooperative yet competitive. A recipient of numerous professional awards and certificates, her stores were also often recognized for meeting and exceeding company goals. Friendly and outgoing, empathetic and conciliatory, and loyal and trustworthy, she maintained as intimate circle of professional friends who became her extended family. Prepared by her birth order, she often played the role of mediator between friends and among family members, preferring compromise to conflict. Her knack of discerning a problem situation during its infancy and squelching it before it escalated made her a beloved sibling, auntie, friend and colleague. Loved by all, she spoiled her grandchildren, nieces and nephews by her generous acts of kindness and having special activities that made them feel loved and cherished. For siblings and friends in need, Shirl went above and beyond. She rarely if ever missed a milestone event; you would scan the audience only to find Ti-Ti Shirl smiling back. She was devoted to her son and grandchildren. They were her pride and joy, always sending family members pictures of their latest adventures and accomplishments. She looked forward, with great joy, to every opportunity to spend time with them. One would often find her telling stories about her exciting future plans for them upon her retirement. Shirl was a diehard Cleveland sports fan. She loved the Browns, Cavaliers and Indians. She was grief-stricken when the Indians lost the World Series; heartbroken after the Browns left town; and saddened, disappointed and angered by the departure of LeBron James from the Cavaliers. Shirl was a faithful fan of Stevie Wonder often among the first to purchase his latest releases. She enjoyed dancing and few knew that she could still "cut a rug." Mourning her premature and untimely death are: her son, Vincent G. Palmer, Jr.; siblings, Susan Boyd, Robert (Winsom) Brown, Carleston (Vivian) Brown, Lillian (Hillel) Brown-Way and Ronald (Andea) Brown all of Cleveland, OH and Shelia (Lloydston) Burton of Dayton, OH; grandchildren; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, colleagues and friends too numerous to mention. The grief expressed by family and friends is a reflection of the magnitude of their loss. Shirl was preceded in death by her siblings, John Brown and Taurus Carr.
