Obituary

"Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of His saints."

Psalm 116:15 NKJV

Susanna "Sue" Whitten Footman, daughter of Wilhemenia Whitten Gavin and the late Benjamin Whitten, was born on August 8, 1958  in Cross, South Carolina. She transitioned from this life on May 26, 2016 in Charleston, South Carolina.

Sue accepted Christ as her Savior at an early age and attended Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in Eutawville, SC.

Sue was educated in the public schools of Berkeley County, SC and was a 1976 graduate of Cross High School. She then attended Claflin University and received a degree in Broadcast Journalism.  During college, she became a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.  After graduation, Sue worked at WMCJ Radio Station in Moncks Corner, SC. Her voice was heard by many at the 6:00 a.m. opening songs at WMCJ. In 1992, Sue returned to college to obtain her Master's Degree in Education. She then worked as an educator at Cross High School, Cross, SC and later transitioned to Timberland High School, St. Stephen, SC. She was an educator for over 20 years and positively influenced the lives of many youth by giving them confidence that they could achieve their goals and dreams. She was recognized as "Teacher of the Year" in 2012.

On August 9, 1981, Sue was joined in Holy Matrimony to Reverend Hoover Larry Footman. This union was blessed with two children, Latrel and Craig Footman. After marriage, Sue became a member of Jehovah AME Church. As her husband progressed as a pastor, Sue developed her own ministry and leadership roles.  She was a member of the Women's Missionary Society and served as Advisor at several churches.

Sue was such a kind, gentle, and quiet person. When you would see her, she would always greet you with a smile.  She enjoyed photography, baking, teaching children, shopping, and spending time with her family. Sue became a grandmother of twins, Lakhai and Hayden Footman in April 2014. She enjoyed singing and playing with her grandchildren. They were the joy of her life.

Sue was preceded in death by her father, Benjamin Whitten and brother Marvin Gethers.

She leaves to treasure her memories a devoted and dedicated husband, Reverend Hoover Larry Footman of the home; two children Latrel (Chantanna) Footman and Craig Footman of Charlotte, NC; two grandchildren Lakhai and Hayden Footman; her mother Wilhemenia (Eddie) Gavin; two sisters, Francena (Jerry) Cooper and Barbara Whitten of Cross, SC; two brothers Benjamin (Vanessa) Gethers and Nathanial (Shannon) Whitten of Cross, SC; a special friend, Ethel Pressley; five sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Pano of Conyers, GA, Lila Wilson (Willie) of Cross, SC, Mary Anne Roberson (John) and Michelle Footman both of Charlotte, NC and Marchell Milligan (Michal) of Hoover, AL; four brothers-in-law, Joseph Footman (Sharon) of New York, Christopher Footman (Yvonne) of Boston, Charles Footman, Jr. of Detroit, MI and Alfonso Footman (Patricia) of Conyers, GA; nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
