Obituary

Come unto to me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart; and ye shall find rest unto your souls. - Matthew 11:28-29

Thirlestine Maria Mayzck Scott departed this life at the age of 78 to be with the Lord Almighty on January 18, 2020.  She was born on September 1, 1941 to the late John Mazyck and the late Florence Pinckney Mazyck in St. Stephen, South Carolina.

She received her academic education and graduated from Russellville High School in Berkeley County.

At an early age, she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and joined Holy Rock Missionary Baptist Church of St. Stephen, SC.  During her time of attendance, she readily served on the Sunday School Department committee and various roles within the church as needed.

Thirlestine moved to Philadelphia, PA where she lived with her late sister Mildred Stevens.

She met and later married Melvin Scott of Baltimore, MD.  From this union was born two sons: Anthony and Melvin Jr.

When her mother became ill, Thirlestine decided to move back home to St. Stephen to assist with her mother's care and rearing of her son Anthony and nephew the late deacon Richard Kelly.  After the passing of her mother, she made another tough decision to stay in South Carolina. While living in Berkeley county, she worked at Knit-Ware Manufacturer as a Production Line Supervisor and Reliable Electric Company.

She was preceded in death by her late husband, Melvin Scott and her late son Melvin Scott Jr. whose time on this earth was only very brief.

She was always a high energy and a very curious person who loved to tinker, alter, and pull (break!) things apart just to see how it was assembled to try and make it work better (Okay now!).  She also loved to sew and make her own outfits.  People who knew Thirlestine could always count on getting some kind of advice, whether they wanted it or not; this was her way of showing you that she cared. When her health would allow it, she would make time to drive her elders to their doctors' appointments and grocery shopping, despite working a late shift the night before.  After a disability retirement, she studied the tax codes and processed yearly income taxes for her neighbors and friends.

Those left to mourn her passing include: her son, Anthony Scott (Mona Joseph-Scott) of Chelmsford, MA; her "Self-Appointed Son" & "Loving" caregivers Christopher Howard (Sherry) of Moncks Corner, SC.; siblings: Dorothy Howard of St. Stephen, SC; Lucretia Howard, Alphonza Mazyck, both of New Haven, CT; James (Shelia) Mazyck of Wilmington, NC; and Elijah (John) Mazyck of Rockingham, NC; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
