Mr. Thomas S. Plowden, beloved son of the late Annie Plowden, was born on August 23, 1939 in Charles County, Maryland. Having fought the good fight of faith, he received his wings to glory on Friday, May 10, 2019 at Life Care Center of Charleston in North Charleston, South Carolina.
Thomas received his early childhood education in a Catholic school. He continued his education in Brandies High School in New York. At a young age, he became an altar boy. In his early twenties, he worked at Columbia University School of the Arts in the maintenance department for 41 years.
On August 27, 1966, Thomas married the love of his life, Alice R. Joyner at the Church of the Holy Trinity in New York City, New York. They never had any children, but they took on the role of parenting their younger siblings.
Thomas was a loving, caring, generous person and will be missed by all who knew him. He was a good listener and gave great advice. He had a beautiful smile that he wore everywhere he went, and children were drawn to his playful demeanor. He often talked about how proud he was that he named his little sister Fatima which means Mary.
Thomas fond memories will be cherished by his devoted wife of 52 years, Alice R. Plowden of SC; his sister, Mary (Jacques deceased) Williams of MD; two brothers, Eric (Angela) Chesley of MD and Doran (Sithandazila) Chesley Sr. of Africa; two sisters-in-law, Lorraine (James deceased) Robinson of SC and Dorothy (Orville) Wilson of GA; two brothers-in-law, Barry Dezelle of SC and John (Anne deceased) Dezelle Jr. of SC; nieces and nephews, Gabrielle, Jacquetta (Mary), Angel, Doran Jr., Megan, Nandi (Doran Sr.), Delante (Ricky deceased), Monique, Terrence (Lorraine), Marcia (Dorothy), Danielle, Spencer, Angel, Norman Jr., and Johnelius (John Jr.); cousin, Florence Wilson. He is also survived by his dear friend Patricia Rigby; and a host of other relatives and friends.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, May 18, 2019, at 11:00 a.m., at Centenary United Methodist Church, 1837 Old Highway 52, Moncks Corner, SC. Burial will be in the church's cemetery. Viewing will be Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
