Obituary

The measure of a man relies on his life's work, his values, and his standards. His beliefs in all things good should be represented in his everyday living and should be ever present to all those who come in contact with him. Todd LaMon Smith was born on May 21, 1958 to the late LaMon Smith and Hannah Smith Wade. He was born into a family of five brothers and sisters. Todd was introduced to Christ at a young age and was a member of Ephesian Church of God in Christ in Berkeley, CA. He was a member of the Sunshine Children's Choir that was directed by his Mother and played the trumpet and trombone for the church choir. Todd received his education in Oakland, CA where he received "Most Valuable Player" for basketball and track and field; in football he took his team to the state championship and was awarded the trophy for "All City Most Valuable Player" three years in a row. Todd welcomed his beautiful daughter Sha Rhonda into the world in 1975, and the following year he enrolled in Laney Community College. He was offered a full scholarship to Eastern Oregon University. Before leaving for school, he married Alta Dotson on his birthday. In 1980, Todd was drafted to play for the Oakland Raiders and this was also the year that Todd and Alta welcomed their precious daughter Myisha into the world. Todd's football career would be short lived due to a tragic motorcycle accident. Once he was back on his feet, he went to help his mother and sister expand their family day care to six facilities in the Bay Area. Todd, along with his uncle Enoch, would completely gut out, restore, and paint the buildings to perfection; this would be the start of his construction career. Todd married Carren Wiggins in 1988, and they moved to South Carolina where he raised her five children as his own. Todd assisted with the family business, S&W Community Care Home which was an eighteen bedroom facility. In 1992 Todd met and fell in love with Barbara Levine where he helped raise her son as his own and in 1995 they had his "Gum Drop" Tyece. Todd believed in putting family first and enjoyed spending his time with his grandsons Nasir and Ramonte. He was adamant that all his children form a close bond together because family was everything to him. He would later open The Lil Owl Care Assistance for The Homeless. Todd took great pride in helping others, and with the help of the Lowcountry Food Bank, he opened the first food pantry in the Macedonia, Andrews, and St. Stephen areas. He established a work release program for inmates from the local jail and a work program that would provide transportation to and from the worksites. Todd also was very active with troubled youth and had a way of building up their self-esteem. Todd was a master of all trades and loved to cook. In 2010 he opened Blacks Barbeque in Hollywood, SC. It was an instant success. The first restaurant quickly became too small for the constant flow of customers, so after a year Todd transferred to a larger facility. After a three year run Todd closed the doors to his restaurant to return to the family business due to the illness of his mother. After Momma's home going, being the entrepreneur that he was, Todd put his construction company back to work. In everything that Todd did, he always acknowledged our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Todd was involved in opening the doors to three churches which were under the leadership of Bishop Jerome Wilson and his mother. He professed his love for the Lord everywhere he went and always shared his testimony of his life and how the Lord delivered him out of the lion's mouth. The praises of the Lord were continuously on his lips. On the day God called Todd home, he was in constant praise giving thanks for all God had done for him; and on March 20, 2015, God opened up the gates of Heaven and called him home. Todd LaMon Smith was truly one of a kind with a heart as big as the sky. He touched many lives with his generosity, love and kindness. He will be greatly missed. We loved him but God loved him more. The late great Todd LaMon Smith leaves his loving memory to cherish with: his partner in life Barbara Levine; his children Sha Rhonda Polk, Myisha (Maurice) Smith, Tyece Smith, Essie Wiggins, Shawn Wiggins, Rickey Baker- Smith, Donald (Stephanie) Wiggins, Christopher Levine, and Devonte Lampkin; siblings Lillian (Ollie) Usher, Jerry Le Chin, Valarie (Samuel) Smith, LaMel (Anita) Smith, Mark (Shannon) Weiss, and Alvin Kondasch; 28 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; four aunts, Carrie Boyd, Mazie (Willie) Dixon ,Minna Levine, and Queen Esther Mertease; two uncles, Enoch (Betty) Pringle, and Willie Ray Smith; one great aunt, Chessie Harbinson; a special niece, Unique Corgile; and a host of family and friends who will continue to love and cherish his memory.
