Obituary

" For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in  the heavens." 2 Corinthians 5:1

On Monday, June 24, 2019, Vera Mae Vermell Reid, a kind and loving soul, departed her earthly house and returned to the Author and Finisher of her faith, our Lord Jesus Christ.  She was the oldest of nine (9) children born to Mrs. Alice Gibbs Reid and Mr. Nathaniel Theodore Reid (only five of the nine children survived).  Vera was born on May 30, 1943, in Charleston, SC.

Vera grew up in the Liberty Hill Section of North Charleston, SC where she and her four siblings were nurtured and brought up in the admonition of Jesus Christ.  The faith that she learned at the knees of her mother would forever be an integral part of her life.  She held on to that faith, even up to the time of her passing.  In 1961, Vera moved to Moncks Corner and stayed with her auntie, Geraldine Gibbs.  Her family soon followed and moved to Moncks Corner, SC, in July 1963. Seeking better opportunities, Vera moved to Brooklyn, New York and later became a resident of Hempstead, Long Island, NY. After finding her career passion, Vera worked in Medical Surgical Nursing (the single largest nursing specialty in the United States) at Hempstead General Hospital for many years before moving on to her next employment assignment at Long Island Jewish/North Shore Hospital.  She finally ended her nursing career at Franklin General Hospital, located in Valley Stream, NY, as a Floor Nurse.  Vera's nursing career spanned over 50 years.  She was a member of the Nursing Organization Local Union 1099, in the State of New York.  Vera was very loving and giving, especially as she nurtured her siblings. She was even very philanthropic to various charities throughout the United States.

Vera graduated from Bonds Wilson High School, North Charleston, in 1961. She received her Licensed Practical Nursing Degree in the State of New York and later obtained her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing at Molloy College, Rockville Centre, New York.  She was licensed by the State Education Department, State of New York, Division of Professional Licensing Services as a Registered Professional Nurse.

Vera gave birth to a handsome son, Todd Eugene, who would later become an intelligent and anointed Man of God.  He joined her in New York after his time in the United States Army,

Vera began her Christian journey as a member of the Moncks Corner Church Of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Apostolic Faith, Inc., where she was baptized and received the Gift of the Holy Ghost.  After moving to New York, she became a faithful and devoted member of Faith Baptist Church (FBC), under the leadership of Reverend Joseph Howell. Vera joined her melodious voice to FBC Adult Church Choir, actively supported FBC in its Outreach Travel Ministry and participated on many other FBC Church Committees. She not only gave tirelessly of her time, but generously of her finances to ensure there was Meat in God's House.  In 2010, Vera moved back home to Moncks Corner, SC, and became a faithful member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Moncks Corner, SC, until her health failed.

Vera was a stylish and meticulous fashionista.  She was fun-loving and always cognizant of her family's state and condition.  She loved to watch tennis, golf and basketball on television, even as far back when Michael Jordan was in his heyday. Most times, Vera kept her television tuned to MSNBC, all day long, keeping abreast of the happenings in the world in which she lived. She liked the idea of exercising from time to time.  She was "VERY" involved in her son's life.  Some of her favorite coined phrases included "Hey Turkey", "Doll" and "May God Bless Your Life Today".  She had a great sense of humor and was the life of many events.

She was predeceased by her loving and doting parents, Alice and Nathaniel Reid, and the four siblings that did not survive.

Vera will be lovingly remembered by: a loving son, Todd Eugene Reid, of Amityville, NY; three (3) brothers, Jerome (Alma) Reid, of Moncks Corner, SC, Clarence (Marie) Reid, of Hope Mills, NC, Archie (Paula) Reid, of Goose Creek, SC; one (1) sister, Miriam (Calvin) Limehouse, of Moncks Corner, SC; two (2) uncles, Sass Burden, of Moncks Corner, SC, Joe Gibbs, of Philadelphia, PA; two (2) aunts, Daisy Dawson, of Bronx, NY, Alma Burden, of Moncks Corner, SC; a god-daughter, Stephanie Hamilton Brown, of Goose Creek, SC; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A special thanks to nieces, Janelle L. Fordham, of Moncks Corner, SC and Crystal Limehouse, of North Charleston, SC for their special care during Vera's illness, and her brother-in-law, Calvin, for his unselfishness.
