Vernelle Levine Harris
On Thursday, March 17, 2022, Vernelle Levine Harris, a loving mother, sister, aunt, friend and servant leader transitioned at the age of 74 at Trident Medical Center, Charleston, South Carolina.
Vernelle was born on February 10, 1948 in Cross, South Carolina, a daughter of the late Henry Levine, Sr. and Rena Wilson Levine. She grew up in Cross and Moncks Corner, SC.
She was educated in the Berkeley County Public School System. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Claflin University, Orangeburg, SC and her Master of Arts degree from New Jersey City University (formerly Jersey City State College), Jersey City, NJ. Vernelle was a teacher and administrator in the Jersey City Public Schools before retiring after decades of service to Snyder High School and Ferris High School students in Jersey City, NJ. After retiring from a lifetime of public service, Vernelle relocated to South Carolina to continue her life's journey.
Vernelle had a passion for fishing, interior decorating, DIY projects and gardening. She loved to watch sunrises and sunsets. She was also an avid music lover. She was known for her quick wit, her infectious smile and her kind and compassionate spirit.
She was formerly married to Robert Harris, who preceded her in death. They raised two daughters, Gilda Nicole Harris and Michelle Yvette Harris. Howard Ford became her lifetime partner and best friend.
One of ten children, six siblings preceded her in death: Lucretia Levine, Henry Levine, Jr., Harry Levine, Anthony Gene Levine, John Arthur Levine and Iris Mae Levine.
Vernelle leaves to cherish many fond memories: her daughters, Gilda Nicole Harris and Michelle Yvette Harris; three grandchildren, Jayde S. Bryant, Yasmine R. Noel and Mikai G. Noel; her siblings, Barbara Morrison, Charles Jerome Levine (Michelle West Levine) and Joe Nathan Levine; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members.
Viewing will be held Friday, March 25, 2022, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, March 26, 2022, at 11:00 a.m., at O. Allen Gethers, Jr. Memorial Chapel, 200 Grace Street, Moncks Corner, SC. (Seating is limited.) The service will be live streamed on the funeral home's Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/gethersfh . Face masks are required at the viewing and the service.
