Obituary

Virgie Crawford Vandross was born in Cordesville, South Carolina on December 24, 1923 to the late Dave and Annie Gaine Crawford.  She attended the Berkeley County school system.

She married Thomas A. Vandross, Sr. on October 28, 1942 in Moncks Corner, South Carolina.  To that union seven children were born: Thomas Jr., David Arthur, Janice, Clarence, Ruby Lee, Robert Allen, and Calvin Lee.

She was an avid member of Greater Emanuel A.M.E. Church until infirmed by deteriorating health.  No longer able to attend church, she looked forward to First Sunday visits with Reverend White, Reverend Gillins, and Brother Gillins who brought the church to her.  Their prayers, fellowship and laughter always lifted her spirits and sustained her.

Virgie was a dedicated and faithful wife, mother, and grandmother.  Her skill at storytelling was a gift often used to lift our spirits.  She enjoyed gardening, cooking and canning. Neighbors often called upon her to prepare their special meals.  She possessed an assortment of homemaking skills that embodied Proverbs 31:27 - She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.

Her husband Thomas A. Vandross, Sr., siblings Joe Crawford, Ruth Hamilton, and Henry Crawford, daughter-in-law Vivian Vandross, and grandson Dion Glenn preceded her in death.

Virgie departed this life on Friday, May 4, 2018 while resting peacefully at home in Moncks Corner, South Carolina.

Her life will forever remain in the hearts of her children Thomas Vandross, Jr. (Louise, Moncks Corner, South Carolina), David A. Vandross (late Vivian, Brockton, Massachusetts,) Janice Vandross Rivers (Samuel, Moncks Corner, South Carolina), Clarence Vandross (Glenda, Brockton, Massachusetts), Ruby Vandross (Goose Creek, South Carolina), Robert A. Vandross (Priscilla, Moncks Corner, South Carolina), and  Calvin L. Vandross (Heuguette, Moncks Corner, South Carolina); 16 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
