September 5, 1954 – November 27, 2020
Mr. Wilbert Lee May, Sr., the son of the late Mr. Charlie C. May, Sr. and Mrs. Ethel Mae Best May, was born on September 5, 1954 in Farmville, NC. He departed from us on November 27, 2020 in Moncks Corner, SC with his family at his bedside.
Wilbert Lee was raised in Park Place in Norfolk, VA. He attended Maury High School and became an avid swimmer. Several years later, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps to pursue a career.
After moving to South Carolina, he married his wife of 40 plus years, Julia V. Brown. He was a hardworking man who cared and loved his family unconditionally. He was a devoted husband, father and a loving son.
Wilbert attended Mt. Carmel AME Church in Moncks Corner, SC under the leadership of Reverend Dr. Eduardo K. Curry. He retired as a Truck Driver from Knights Company where he laid concrete in different residential areas. He loved his "Pink" truck, playing cards, watching NASCAR racing, playing video games at family gatherings and capturing memories in photos and videos. He also enjoyed football and was a New Orleans Saints fan.
Wilbert leaves to cherish his memories: his wife, Julia Valery May; two sons, Wilbert Jr. and Quanchico May; one daughter, Deyandrea Smalls; three grandchildren, Malaysia, Taelyn and Antonio Smalls all of Moncks Corner, SC; his mother, Ethel Mae Best May of Chesapeake, VA; three sisters, Phyllis Broadnax of Chesapeake, VA, Doris (Britt) Hoskins of Elizabeth City, NC and Joyce (Rodney) Johnson of Riverside, CA; five sisters-in-law, Joan (Elijah Jr.) Jefferson of Moncks Corner, SC, Wilhelmina (Anthony Sr.) Mood of Goose Creek, SC, Queen Ester (Frank) Ward of Jamestown, SC, Loretta McCray of Minneapolis, MN and Doretha Singleton of Cross, SC; five brothers-in-law, David (Michelle) Brown of North Charleston, SC, Clifford Brown, Richard Brown, John Brown and Joseph Brown all of Minneapolis, MN; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
Wilbert was preceded in death by his father, Mr. Charlie C. May, Sr.; and brothers, Charlie May, Jr. and Richard Fennell May.
Viewing will be Friday, December 4, 2020 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Graveside Service will be Saturday, December 5, 2020, 1:00 p.m., at Mt. Carmel AME Church Cemetery, 1059 Old Black Oak Road, Moncks Corner, SC. Viewing will be from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service. As per CDC guidelines for COVID-19, please wear a face mask and practice social distancing at the viewing and the service.
