IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Wilhelmina S.
Moore
July 21, 1929 – February 1, 2021
Servant leader, tireless advocate for children, passionate educator, family matriarch, Wilhelmina ("Meaner") Jager S. Moore was born July 21, 1929, in Pineville, South Carolina, to the late Fred ("Bubba Sidney") and Susan ("Sis") Jager.
Wilhelmina attended elementary school in Berkeley and Charleston counties and high school at Voorhees High School, an Episcopal boarding school in Denmark, South Carolina, where she participated in the Latin Club and French Club, among other activities. After graduating from Voorhees Junior College, Wilhelmina moved to New York where she worked for several years, married John Shepherd, and began her family. Later, Wilhelmina returned home, married David Moore, and added to her family. She completed her undergraduate studies at South Carolina State College, and, subsequently, matriculated at the University of Georgia, in Athens, Georgia, to earn her Master's Degree in School Counseling. Always the life-long learner, Wilhelmina later gained acceptance to the doctoral program at South Carolina State University where she earned an Educational Specialist Degree in School Administration and reached ABD (All But the Dissertation) status for the Ph.D. in Educational Administration. She actively continued her dissertation work until age 85 when her health no longer allowed her to pursue her studies.
An extraordinary public school teacher and counselor for over 50 years, Wilhelmina was passionate about helping children excel. She believed EVERY child who wanted to attend college should have that opportunity. As guidance counselor at Central (Cross) High School, she helped countless students in Berkeley County enroll in college (many being first generation high school graduates and college students). She also served on the Berkeley County School Board for over 23 years, while continuing to work full-time in Williamsburg County.
Wilhelmina was also dedicated to her community and church, Mt. Nebo United Methodist Church. She loved Pineville and everyone who lived there. Over the years, she enthusiastically supported causes such as civil rights and equal opportunity to improve the quality of education and life for her community and beyond. Among her many accomplishments and honors, Wilhelmina was named to the Voorhees College Hall of Fame for outstanding achievement and continued support of her alma mater over the years.
In addition to her untiring work, Wilhelmina embraced life. She always looked forward to a good parade and any opportunity to do the electric slide! Her loved ones enjoyed her homemade biscuits and the family recipe for sweet potato pie. She treasured time with those nearest and dearest to her heart, her family and friends as well as those in need.
Having lived a fruitful life and completing God's mission for her on Earth, Wilhelmina was summoned from her labor to eternal rest Monday, February 1, 2021, at St. Francis Hospital in Greenville, South Carolina. (She would have loved that it was the first day of Black History Month.)
Wilhelmina was predeceased by her son John M. Shepherd, her sister Elizabeth ("Liz") Wigfall, and niece Denise Wigfall.
She leaves to mourn her loss: daughter, Michelle S. Meekins and son-in-law, James W. Meekins, Jr. of Greenville, South Carolina; son, Kenneth D. Moore (Tamica) of Atlanta, Georgia; grandchildren: Kendrick J. Meekins (Megan); Brittny M. Meekins Ervin (Paul), and Raeyah Moore; great-grandchildren: Nicholas J. Meekins; Maya, PJ, and Malcolm Ervin; sister: Leola Spencer; nephew: Sidney Gregory Wigfall (Natacha); nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, as well as a host of friends she considered family.
