Reverend William Cullivan Butler, Jr., lovingly known as "Bunk", was born on July 13, 1941. He was the oldest of ten children born to the late William Butler, Sr. and the late Edna Garnett Butler of Moncks Corner, South Carolina. He was reared and educated in the public schools of Berkeley County, graduating from Berkeley Training High School with the Class of 1959. After graduating from high school, Rev. William enrolled at Claflin College, presently known as Claflin University, where he pursued a major in Biology and received his Bachelor of Science Degree. He then began his public school teaching career, and later received his Master of Education Degree from The Citadel. He was an outstanding teacher who captured the hearts of thousands of students during his thirty-three years of dedicated service at: Roberts High School (Orangeburg County), Cainhoy High School, Whitesville Elementary, Boulder Bluff Middle, Howe Hall and Sedgefield Middle (all in Berkeley County). It was at Sedgefield Middle School that he met a special lady, Linda Gaddist, who became the love of his life. William and Linda were joined in Holy Matrimony on April 11, 1981. They were blessed with four lovely children. William was a devoted husband and a loving daddy. Although Rev. William attended Sunday School and sang on the choir at Grace Reformed Episcopal Church at an early age, his spiritual walk really began when he was twenty-nine years old. He has often testified that one Friday night, he accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his Savior and was instantly baptized with the Holy Ghost. His life would never be the same. Rev. William knew the Lord personally. He was a man of deep faith which never faltered, even in his illness. Rev. William continued his spiritual growth while studying at Cummins Memorial Theological Seminary in Summerville, South Carolina, where he received his Master of Divinity Degree. He answered the call to the ministry and was ordained as a Presbyter in the Reformed Episcopal Church. Rev. William received his charge as Pastor at: Mt. Carmel R.E. Church, Goose Creek, SC; Zion R.E. Church, Edisto Island, SC, and currently at Holy Comforter R.E. Church, Cordesville, SC to which he served faithfully until he was called home to be with the Lord. Rev. William loved preaching and teaching the word of God. His main focus was always "salvation". He wanted everyone to be saved. He would always say to the young people, "don't wait as long as I did to be saved." Early Monday morning, January 28, 2013, the Lord dispatched His angels to go to his bedside at Roper Saint Francis Hospital in Charleston, SC to take him to his eternal home. He leaves to cherish fond memories: a loving and devoted wife, Linda; his children: Rev. Kevin Butler (Monica), Lydia Willette Butler, both of Columbia, SC, William Cullivan Butler II, and Grace Elizabeth Butler, both of Moncks Corner, SC; five grandchildren: Lauryn, Leslie, Kevin Jr., McKenzie, and Callie; goddaughters, Shelah Butler and Faith Simmons both of Moncks Corner, SC; his siblings: Herman Butler (Ann) of Riverdale, GA, Ann Butler, John Fred Butler, Isaac Butler, Carol B.
