Obituary

After Glow I'd like the memory of me to be a happy one. I'd like to leave an afterglow of smiles when life is done. I'd like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways, Of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days. I'd like the tears of those who grieve to dry before the sun. Replaced with happy memories left when my life is done. Mr. William Smalls (Punkie), the son of the now late, Mr. Edward (Lute) Smalls and Mrs. Rebecca Bryant Smalls, was born February 16, 1933 in the Broughton Road/Kitfield Community of Berkeley County, Moncks Corner, South Carolina. Saturday evening, September 8, 2012 at Medical University Hospital of South Carolina, Charleston, South Carolina, softly and tenderly, Jesus was calling saying, "Come Home, Come Home." William answered the call and silently went home to live the Lord. He attended the public schools of Berkeley County, Moncks Corner, South Carolina. He was a faithful member of Nazareth Reformed Episcopal Church, West End Drive, Moncks Corner, South Carolina. He met and married the love of his life, Justine England of which he would say, "I knew her six years before we got married because she was still in school." They were married in January 1957. They were blessed with three children; a son, Eric Eugene Smalls preceded him in death. William was a loving and caring person, he loved and cared for his family dearly. He always would say "get your education", and he saw to it that his children and grandchildren got an education. William has never met a stranger. He would always talk to people even if he didn't know them. Listening to him talking, one would think he must know everybody. When asked you know who that is? He would reply, "I just want to talk to somebody to hear what they say." William began work on a public job at an early age of fourteen, being the oldest living child he had to help take care of his siblings as that was the rule at that time. He was a laborer at an early age, doing work at the lumber company, Mill Work. He went to the South Carolina Highway Department of Transportation as a road maintainer, became a foreman and could tell you about every road and community in Berkeley County and some other counties. He retired from the Highway Department in 1987. William was loved by many, but most of all he loved God and God loved him. He was blessed by God in so many ways that many of the persons he grew up with, would wonder how he could do the things that he did. He would say, "God bless me and that is how I did it." As William grew older in age, he also grew in faith and got closer connected with God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, friend and a Christian gentleman. He knew that love is one gift of God that man cannot destroy. Those who will always cherish loving memories of him: his loving and devoted wife, Justine E. Smalls; children, Sharon S. Smith of Moncks Corner, S.C. and Ardis W. Smalls and wife Janie of West Palm Beach, Florida; grandchildren, Brent A. Smith of Iowa, Shari E. Smith of Indiana and Da'Mardis S. Smalls of Columbia, S.C.; sisters, Maggie Sass of Goose Creek, S.C. and Sarah E. Smith of Moncks Corner, S.C.; nephews and nieces, Alpha Smith, Caroline Smith, Tyrone Smalls, Carl Smalls, Frank Sass, Jr., Kevin Sass and Linda Burns; sisters-in-law; brothers-in-law; uncle, Calvin Bryant and wife, Lucille; many cousins, other relatives and friends; and a special friend and buddy, Joseph Gray. And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they? And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. -Revelation 7:13-14
