Obituary

Servant of God, well done. Willie Berkeley Rembert, affectionately known as "Bill", son of the late Reverend Samuel and Rozella Middleton Rembert, was born on September 30, 1918 in Russellville, South Carolina. He attended J.K. Gourdin School and graduated from Claflin College in Orangeburg, South Carolina where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. He later earned eighteen plus hours of graduate credit from the University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Willie taught school for a number of years. He was Principal of Cordesville Elementary School. Later, a new school was built in Huger, South Carolina where Cordesville became a part of Cainhoy High School and Willie became its principal. After consolidation and integration occurred in the South, Willie was one of the first to become a Principal in Berkeley County (at a non-segregated school) becoming Principal of Howe Hall Elementary School, Goose Creek, South Carolina. Willie later on became of the first African-Americans to integrate the Superintendent Department of the Berkeley County School District. He became the first Administrative Assistant of Berkeley County Schools where he worked until his retirement in 1983. Willie worked vigorously in Redeemer Reformed Episcopal Church where he became a member at a very young age. He was elected as Senior Warden and served in that capacity for more than forty-plus years until his retirement. Willie was united in Holy Matrimony to Ruth Elizabeth Saunders. This union was blessed with two children: Willa Ruth and Socrates Berkeley. Willa Ruth preceded him in death. He was a United States Army veteran. This past year he became ill and he was up and down. He was taken to the hospital the latter part of August where he never recovered. On September 12, 2008, at Trident Medical Center, Charleston, South Carolina, he said goodbye world, "I'm going home to my Heavenly Father." Willie is survived by: his wife of sixty-plus years, Ruth; a son, Socrates Rembert; a grandson reared in the home, Rasheith Rembert; a great-granddaughter, Natalia Rembert; two godchildren, Betty Pinckney Pettigrew and Almena Gadsden Prioleau; two brothers, Bishop Sanco King (Carrie Mae) Rembert and John (Hattie Bell) Rembert; sisters-in-law, Mildred B. Rembert, Bernetha Abney and Josephine Blache Jefferson; brothers-in-law, Burdette (Mary) Saunders and S. William (Gladys) Saunders; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, his church family and friends.
