IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Walter Hill,
Jr.
August 26, 1927 – April 9, 2020
Mr. Walter Hill, Jr., a native of Columbia, South Carolina and the eldest child of Mr. Walter Hill, Sr. and Mrs. Mamie L. Hill, was born on August 26, 1927. He entered into eternal rest peacefully on Thursday, April 9, 2020 at Trident Medical Center, North Charleston, South Carolina.
Walter graduated from Booker T. Washington High School and then served four years in the United States Marine Corps. After his honorable discharge from the military, he attended South Carolina State College, now South Carolina State University, Orangeburg, SC where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Education. His professional pursuits led him to Berkeley County where he taught Industrial Arts and Driver's Education at Russellville High School which later was known as St. Stephen High School. He retired from the Berkeley County School District in June 1985, yet maintained active involvement by mentoring young students within the school system.
In 1955, Walter was united in Holy Matrimony to Janie Simmons. This union was blessed with two daughters. His wife Janie preceded him in death on December 20, 2014.
Walter was a member of St. Stephen Baptist Church where he served as Treasurer, Trustee and member of the Male Choir.
Walter held several memberships in various civic and fraternal organizations which included: Jefferson-Grant Lodge #315, Free and Accepted Masons, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., NAACP, Adopt-A-Highway Program, and a former Board member of the Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Head Start Program. He was instrumental in organizing a holiday toy drive sponsored by the Iota Beta Beta Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
Walter served as Constable for the Berkeley County Magistrate's Court in St. Stephen, SC after his retirement from the school district. He was recently celebrated as Berkeley County Government's oldest employee at the age of 92. In his role as constable, he was known to serve an eviction notice with one hand, and give them a bag of groceries with the other hand. Mr. Hill said his faith-filled mission was to help people in need.
Walter received several awards and recognitions for his service. These include: the Berkeley County School District's "Living Legend" Award (2010) for being innovative, committed to children and having a passion for teaching and learning; the Congressional Gold Medal for his service as a Montford Point Marine; the South Carolina House of Representatives Award; Moncks Corner Panhellenic Council Award; Jefferson-Grant Lodge Mason of the Year; Omega Psi Phi Founders' Award and Omega Psi Phi Man of the Year. A highway marker was dedicated to Mr. Hill in 2016. The South Carolina General Assembly and the South Carolina Department of Transportation had the marker erected and located on the right side of Highway 45 West, St. Stephen, SC.
Those left to cherish his precious memories are: two daughters, Ms. Alfreda T. Hill of Moncks Corner, SC and Mrs. Francine H. (Ernest) Williams of West Columbia, SC; two grandchildren, Mr. Patrick (Georgia) Williams of Irmo, SC and Ms. Tameaka A.
